How Age Is Calculated | Understanding Different Age Systems

The age calculation is different in culture and tradition. The most popular and globally used method is the Western age system. Here, age adds up every year on the birthday. Let’s take an example: if a person has survived for 3 years and 11 months, then his/her age would be 3 years, and he/she will become 4 years old on his/her next birthday.

But in other cultures, how age is reckoned can vary. For example, some nations state age by inserting the present year of existence into the equation. A person who is twenty years old might also be said to be in their twenty-first year.

Under normal Chinese age calculation, everyone is 1 at birth, and the age of everyone grows together during the Lunar New Year, but not on personal birthdays. In case of a baby born one day before the Chinese New Year, she will turn 2 years old two days later , although she is only 2 days old in Western terms.

It is also worth mentioning that the difference of months and days in age is sometimes hard to understand, particularly for end-month dates. For instance, a period of February 20 to March 20 is exactly one month. However, in the case of February 28, 2022 to March 31, 2022, there are two possible understandings:

• If we measure Feb 28 to Mar 28 as a single whole month, the answer is 1 month and 3 days.

• If we measure from the end of both Feb 28 and Mar 31, the answer is 1 month.

Both are acceptable, but in this age calculator, we use the first method, which is based on absolute date ranges.
